Fund the Need

Chatham Education Foundation is honored to present two additional grants to the community via its Fund the Need Campaign. On October 6th, Chatham Education Foundation approved $26,712 in grants to support the School District of the Chathams, for a total of $58,313 awarded this school year. In lieu of our major annual fundraising events this year, CEF asks for our community's direct assistance in being able to fund these grants through our Fund the Need Campaign.

CMS Community Social Justice Read Grant

Students in grades 6th - 8th will benefit from the CMS Community Social Justice Read grant awarded to Mr. George Iannuzzi, Mrs. Gina Bakaj, Miss Sarah Pasternak, and Ms. Kristine Quintero. The $19,266 grant calls for a multi-faceted approach to the reading of the work Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes and is a part of a “One Book, One Community” initiative.  The grant calls for a multi-faceted approach to the reading of Ghost Boys by CMS students and parents, faculty, administrators, and staff. In addition to the 1200 copies of Ghost Boys, the grant includes 120 copies of two other non-fiction texts that will be explored in ELA classrooms to help support this work. The grant also includes three Professional Development workshops for CMS and CHS teachers with the author, Ms. Rhodes, on how to expose their ELA students to diverse texts that address fair and equitable relations between individuals and society. Ready Readers K-3 Grant

The Ready Readers Grant will benefit students at all three of our K-3 Schools. This grant for $7,447 was awarded to co-applicants Peggy Herr, Kim McMurray and Lori Shulman. The goal in Basic Skills Instruction is to instill a love of reading through the use of the Leveled Literacy Intervention. Finding authentic, research-based resources to reach individual students with different learning styles, interests, and needs can be challenging. This grant includes many copies of over 130 new titles for reading levels A-K.  Included with the system are "take home" books and transport bags so students can bring home the same books they are working on in the classroom.  Furthermore, there are a variety of teaching tools to support virtual and in class learning, such as access to digital leveled books and over 130 folders that focus on oral reading as well as comprehension activities.  Lastly, the program includes resources for teachers so they can enhance both their virtual and in-person teaching through lesson ideas and materials.
